Maybe they are cooking bananas, but it would hurt to put some ripe or semi ripe bananas and se what happens. Or you could just cook them. Either way let us know.

I buy reds like this at Kroger's sometimes and they usually need to ripen up a bit before they are edible. I usually wait to let the peel turn pretty dark and once the fruit yields a bit when you squeeze it, it's good to go. The one's I have eaten have a slight orange tint to the flesh. I've never considered them to be a cooking banana but that doesn't mean they aren't or couldn't be used that way.

Assuming that this has any bearing on your reds (which it may not have), our reds need to be softening slightly before they are good to eat - we also get a colour change to more sunset colours - often takes a long time when the fruit is picked very green.

Hey everyone I just bought some as well and was wondering what type they are. I called the company and she didn't know what type (no surprise there) but she said you eat them like a regular (dessert) banana and they are very sweet. She told me some people cook them but most eat them ripe.
I have mine in a bag with a hand of cavendish to speed up the ripening process. I will post how they taste later it seems like they are taking a while to ripen. |

Our local Albertson's and Ralphs almost always carry them. Often they were picked too early and never ripen properly. Look for very plump ones and wait for them to get a bit soft and show hints of lighter colors (like they were turning yellow under the red). They are very tasty. They are more aromatic than Cavendish and have a nice, dense texture. Don't buy skinny hard ones that haven't filled out -- it's a waste of money. Like others said, definitely a dessert banana.

Sounds looking a very an awesome and testy, I have to say that the red banana has more beta carotene and vitamin C than the yellow banana varieties. One red banana gives 422 mg potassiam, 10 mg vitamin C, 3 g fiber, 105 calories, etc so we must have eat at least one read banana everyday.
