Yes, from the Philippines.
And there is one pomello there that tastes out of this world. It is called Davao pomello. The skin is so easy to peel, thin and the meat is so soft, yet firm and so sweet, the balance of sweet and tanginess is superb. The meat is so easy to peel from the skin. Once you start eating it, you'll never stop. No one has yet to develop that in here. I am going to contact the firm regarding the Philippine lacatan now that I know I can grow bananas in my backyard. Thanks for the info.

Benny - I am drooling already. Did you see that Greenie offers pups from both sorts of Lacatan as potential prizes? Perhaps he might know of a source closer to home?

Pisang Raja is very good, Mysore, Brazilian, Lakatan, Latundan, Senorita, Jamacan Red, Misi Luki & Silk are on my list (in no particular order) but the one that really stands out is an unamed hybrid of Honduran origin i had at a Costa Rican farm.

Harvey:
YOU are ON!! Thanks for letting me know. I'll guard it just as I guard the mahoi Joe Real gave me. I put all of my potted bananas now inside my patio and I enclosed it with clear plastics. The tempt might be the same as the outside but I think all of them will survive the lower tempt that is coming this Saturday. The prediction will be 36 low. CORRECTION: 34 F low

Ink cube - I try to keep my wish list small but it keeps growing! Thanks to all who have tasted different varieties for your input - much better than just reading about different flavours and by the spring I will have saved up enough to pay for the shipping!! lol

bencelest, i personally grow very few bananas in my yard - mostly dwarf varieties and basjoo. because of my research & consulting i have traveled quite a bit and therefore been to many banana plantations. i wish i had some lakatan or senorita trees.

I tried some ripe bananas of my "KRU" variety for the first time.I was impressed with the flavor and texture. They have a nice, sweet, not over-powering flavor.I think this variety will be a keeper!
.Some of the fruit's skin SPLIT though, resulting in a few lost fruit. |

greenie, is it normal for that type of nana to split? (ha ha no pun intended) im still trying to get my wish list together for santa for next year. and im trying to base it on the things i read from the other members, about growing habits, fruit taste, and general hardiness of the tree. im starting to lean towards the dwarfs, but there are a few of the " larger trees" that i just have to have! so any info would be appriciated. the only problems i forsee is when i move back home and i wonder how many trips i have to make with 20 ft. nana trees and the biggest size 18 wheeler i can possibly get my hands on.

About Lacatan. I remember from some source that Lacatan was once, or may still be, one of the bananas of commerce. Chiquita supplied them to grocery stores in the USA.

Cassie:
I kid you not! The best are the bigger ones. The color of the meat is almost pale red and the peels are not yellowish but more so on the bright darker yellow. If the fruit is ripened on the tree the meat is almost hard but when you peel the peelings you will smell the sweet aroma unique to the lacatan. And the taste is really out of this world. So far I have not tasted anything better and I traveled many places before. But then again taste is relative to each person.
