I'm gonna say the L is DC and R is GN. I've got a 50-50 guess, so there's nothing to lose!

im not gonna say if you are right or wrong but you were the first one brave enough to answer.thanks.

Note: i dont have any mature gran nains or dwarf cavs with stalks pictured in my gallery only corms.
i have two gran nains and two dwarf cavs. i got them from 4 separate growers from 4 separate states. (wanted to make sure i had really had gran nain and dwarf cav). i compared them and found that one had a deeper red pigmentation than the other.

My DC has pinkish, brown and red P-stem with black spots and almost red petioles. My GN is however much more pale, it has green, brown, grey, waxy P-stem with slightly pinkish petioles.

ok you think the dwarf cav is the one with the dark red stem on the left?? .

Since it's for fun can I guess one of them isn't a Dwarf Cavendish? I was given one about 8" and its full of red blotches on the leaves. I'll go with grand nain on the left since I don't have a clue.

bob you have broken away from the pack... i wont tell you if you are right/wrong or half right/wrong just yet.

note: according to 4 separate growers there is one gran nain and one cavendish..they have both just began to lose their heavy red blotches at this stage(there are a few on some of the leaves)..

I would have to go with the pack--DC left, GN Right.

I second that.

Re: wild guesses(for fun only)

first off i wanna say the answer that im giving is based on what the individual growers have suggested. i thought it would be good to post this thread to illustrate that there is a lot of confusion in the backyard banana business.

dont know about anyone else but,the more cultivars i seem to aquire the more confused i get.:ha:

well from what the growers have told me the gran nain is on left (the red stalk banana with black spots). on the right (rust/ green stalk with black spots) is supposed to be the dwarf cavendish.

from what i have read the dwarf cavendish is supposed to have persistant male flowers and bracts that remain and fill the space between to the bunch and the terminal bud as the fruit matures..... that should be a way to tell them apart.

i could have had one of the red stalk banana cultivar (called gran nain) flower by now but i left it outside last year. the main p stem died.. the corm is huge still.. i cut off all the suckers but one or two.

Gran Nain and Dwarf Cavendish look IDENTICAL other than height. I know this from experience, and then mixed the two up and couldn't remember which was which. Thankfully they both died this past winter so I don't have to be confused any longer!

I didn't chime in at the time, but now I figure I will. You can't tell the difference between the two until they are mature plants. Secondly, your plant on the right doesn't even look like either currently because it looks like a few sheaths have been taken off revealing only a whitish/green stem.

Good luck.

Damn...I lost! I always say that the only luck I have is 'NO luck.' Guess this holds true for 50-50 guesses too! :ha:
