Planted last year (single stalk) ... no clue what I am doing right / wrong

Suggestions would be gratefully accepted!

Purple pod is at the top of my head and I am 5'8"

I'm no expert but the second image makes it look like an Orinoco. If this is what you're worried about they look normal to me. I've seen a lot of Orinoco with very few hands. There may be things you can do to improve production but I wouldn't be the one to ask more on that.

Doesn't look like an Orinoco to me. They don't have open petioles with red edges.

It doesn't look like a Raja Puri, Caligold, Dwarf Orinoco, Orinoco, DB, or Veinte Cohol.. :^)

Doesn't look like Orinoco, but it's hard to say what it might be. Next time it flowers, post photos of the female and male flowers. And when the fruit ripen, post some photos of them. And photos of the petiole canal and leaves of any water suckers it produces.

I'm still a noob but as for suggestions on what to improve on: soil. It's hard to tell just from the photos, but your soil looks sad to me. Bananas are heavy feeders, and benefit from generous amounts of compost and organic matter. Some of the most successful banana mats I've seen are basically growing out of a giant compost pile and it's my understanding that you can pretty much pile as much on as you want. If I were you I would expand that edging circle a bit and get yourself some yummy composted material and pile it on about 6-8" all around.

Also, the little pup in the foreground of the last picture looks to be what's called a "water sucker." I believe it is best to remove these. Sorry for the double post

Water suckers are okay, they're just less desirable for propagating. Some of my plants tend to produce a lot of water suckers, and I just cut them off when they're big enough to propagate with.
