Show us a picture of the inflorescence and the plant itself.

The fruit don't have the bottle nose that is characteristic of Dwarf Brazilian / Brazilian, but I've noticed that sometimes they don't. I don't know why.

What do they taste like? Have you had Dwarf Brazilian fruit before?

Comparing them to supermarket cavendish, they are sweeter and have a softer texture. I have had the dwarf brazilian while in Hawaii, but I cant tell if these that I have are the same in taste. I would need to try them both at the same time.

It does seem like Dwarf Brazilian and Goldfinger are the two most likely possibilities, especially given that you got both from Tony. They are pretty similar looking plants, but it should be easy to distinguish the two based on what the inflorescence looked like. Goldfinger has a mostly "clean" rachis below the fingers, whereas Dwarf Brazilian has a "messy" rachis with retained bracts and male flowers. Check out the photos below. What did yours look like? Goldfinger also has proportionally longer and more droopy leaves with longer petioles. I wouldn't put too much stock in how soft or firm the fruit was -- that changes a lot with stage of ripeness -- but on average, DB is a bit more firm than a Cavendish, whereas Goldfinger is more similar to a supermarket Cavendish.

Well, looks like it is Dwarf Brazilian after all. Strange that the fruits have no real bottle nose, but that is a trait that varies with climate. I knew Tony wouldn't steer you wrong! :08:

It is remarkable how variable some traits are, especially as affected by climate and nutrition. Climate, for example, seems to strongly affect flower color and fruit size and shape. So much so that some of the keys to varieties in the Kepler and Rust book don't work when applied in my cool environment.

With the fruit being affected that much from a physical stand point, I wonder how much different it is as far as taste. "Look like fish, taste like chicken?"

I'm sure climate affects taste somewhat. To me, Dwarf Brazilian / Brazilian ("Hawaiian Apple") in Hawaii taste a bit more earthy and a bit less tart than those grown in my cooler climate. But you can tell they are the same thing, just slightly different in flavor.
