Re: Thomsonii or cheesmanii
If it was between those two, I would say M. cheesmanii, but there is always the possibility it's something else or a hybrid or something new. What did the seed look like? They have very different seed, but M. cheesmanii seed is quite distinct.

Re: Thomsonii or cheesmanii
I dont think i took pics of the seed, but looking at the pics of your thomsonii and looking at mine, they didnt match. Im no expert but to me they looked closer to cheesmanii. Now im annoyed, i didn't buy any cheesmanii, so i know i didnt mix it up.

Re: Thomsonii or cheesmanii
Difficult to gauge the size, but Thompsonii are smaller than Cheesmani and don't have 'spikes'. If they are small, kind of Velutina sized, they are Thompsonii.
They don't really look like Chessmanii. |

Re: Thomsonii or cheesmanii
These are the seeds of the second plant. The one supposedly helens hybrid that im almost convinced is thomsonii. I have an old pic by gabe that shows great resemblance but its not mine so i wont post it. I dont have pics of the seeds of the first plant but it resembles a lot of pics of cheesmanii plants. Do you grow these J,?

Re: Thomsonii or cheesmanii
Definitely not Helen's hybrid. If you press me I'd say they look more like Yunnanensis.

Re: Thomsonii or cheesmanii
Okay so after googling alot of pics, im pretty sure the top plant i thought was thomsonii is actually cheesmanii. This link of mark Davies (not the seed source,) has a pic that matches plus others on this site and elsewhere too.
https://markdaviesseeds.co.uk/musa-c...s-banana-plant The second plant, supposedly helens hybrid has seeds that resemble thomsonii and the form seems correct. So im going to tentatively label as such. |

Re: Thomsonii or cheesmanii
Helen's Hybrid is a hybrid, so the offspring seedlings, even if it was self-pollinated, may not look exactly like the parent. They could resemble Sikkimensis or Chini Champa more in different ways.
If the seedlings do not look like the parent, that doesn't necessarily mean they didn't come from the parent. The parent could possibly have been pollinated by another banana in the vicinity, if it was surrounded by many bananas and there happened to be another that was flowering at the same time, in which case you could have an exciting new hybrid. Though it may be hard to figure out what the other parent is. The pollen parent should not affect what the seeds look like, though. So hybrid seeds would not look different. |
