Well went to see a new client today and she had a very interesting Nanner patch. She remembers very little about it, her memory isn't good any more , she has had it over 10 yrs and unfortunately the berry patch has taken over which makes the bananas hard to reach but i did manage to get 1 plant. All she remembers is it came from a commercial grower outside the US possibly India and it reaches 20+ ft tall. She gets about 6 large bunches of Nanners a year and she said they are really good to eat. My observation, the leaves are trimmed in red and the middle has a red vein. I know it is probably impossible to id this early but thought i would throw it out there. I have 4 pics of my new manner in my album from today.

what do you think? possible Mysore?

Good to finally id, a little unusual though no red on the leaves at all like my tall namwa. This one also has red going all the way up the p stem. Anyway I am happy with Namwa, it has been a 3yr mystery that has come to pass.

Are you saying its one of these two bananas, or are the two just different names for the same plant? Also, would your guess be a dwarf namwah, as opposed to a tall namwah? I have what I believe to be dwarf namwah, and my understanding is they fruit at 9-12ft vs much larger for tall namwah.. Thanks for any clarification!

Seth, Gabe gave it an id of Namwah. I would assume it is a dwarf, my tall Namwah is about 12ft and growing. For me the 2nd year fruit more and the fruiting height is much taller. For example I have a 1st year Dwarf Brazillian mat and a 2 yr and both have flowers and fruit and their is at least 2ft difference.

Yes, would be a dwarf. if there wasn't so much leaf removal from winter damage the Pstem would be alot thicker and look the part of a dwarf in the pictures better. You can also see the leaves are very wide compared to a tall variety.

Could be an undernourished tall namwah. I've seen tall namwas (original planting) without proper resources (sunlight, water, fertilizer) fruit at heights of 5-6'.

My understanding is that most dwarves have messy rachis (long chain of male flowers that don't fall off)? Not sure if this is the case with dwarf namwa but that is usually how to tell whether its a dwarf or a tall. Let the flower run and see what happens with the male flowers to get a better ID.

will see, she is pampered pretty good with fruit fuel, rich soil, full sun and plenty of water. now where i got her 3yrs ago, she was a neglected little pup. She is happy now. more pics to come. i'm happy either way.

You take quite good care of your plants! My point is that just because the Namwa is flowering at a short height it does not mean that its a dwarf. There are posts in the archives of people saying something like, "Dude, my dwarf namwa is fruiting at 12' pstem this year, whats up with that?" LOL.

If I recall correctly Gabe has said on more than one occassion that the first three months of the plant's life are critical in achieving its ultimate size. A childhood on the mean streets might have effected it plus first year plants are always shorter than their offspring.

Your patch looks great this year! Gonna be a bumper harvest!

Thanks I had forgotten about what Gabe had said, its been a while but I do remember. . Makes sense if you think about it. Just like the rescue dogs I take in. It takes a while to undo the damage sometimes.
