Supposed to be sweetheart...

Re: Supposed to be sweetheart...
I have a sweetheart that's around 8 feet tall right now. Mine doesn't have any red on the mid ribs nor the psuedostem. May I ask your source? That may help in identifying what it may be.
By the way, I see that you're fairly close to me. If you ever need any pups or have any questions just let me know. I currently have goldfinger, brazilian, ice cream, namwa, double mahoi, sweetheart, mona lisa, pisang raja, raja puri, veinte cohol, mysore, manzano, kandarian, and sh-3640. |

Re: Supposed to be sweetheart...
Before I fill up more of my yard space, I am looking to taste a few varieties first. It seems to me to be a good idea. I have not tried many different types and don't know what I like.
I am a little ticked about this one also being wrong as the original ice cream I was supposed to get from Green Earth Publishing turned out to be wrong, possibly even a plantain, and the Manzano I got from him last year turned out to be a Brazilian (Which is actually ok.) But even the two replacements for the plantain he sent as Blue Java turned out to be Namwah. (Big surprise, and most likely ok, too.) Now another unknown banana / plantain. Do NOT buy from Green Earth Publishing if you do not like mystery plants. Those mystery plants will be well developed and healthy, just not what you wanted. Ones I think I want (From your list) are Veinte Cohol, Mysore and possibly 3640... I hear that one is pretty good. I tend to like less acidic and more banana-ey flavor but Brazilian acidity wasn't bad. Store bought Manzano is a bit more than I prefer. I like the idea of that meet n greet... And thank you for the offer of help. I may just use it someday. |
Re: Supposed to be sweetheart...
Heck, I'm up in the northern end of Brevard but I do like to party. Well, I did long ago and, now that I'm older and not much wiser, I'm testing those waters again. Seriously, we need to do a meet and greet. Once upon a time I helped set up mid Atlantic gardenweb swaps. During my tenure our group got booted from parks throughout MD and VA. Apparently 60+ people descending on a park carrying many potted plants along with a side dish for 6 or more made the fuzz nervous.

Re: Supposed to be sweetheart...
Just put my sweetheart in the ground about a week ago and it doesn't have that coloring either. I will try to post a picture tomorrow.

Re: Supposed to be sweetheart...
Thanks everybody. Does anyone have any ideas about what it IS?

Re: Supposed to be sweetheart...
To me it looks like a classic Dwarf Nam Wah. Great banana with great taste but from a plant/growth point of view I truly love my Sweethearts!

Re: Supposed to be sweetheart...
i have tried Orinoco, Cavendish, Mona Lisa, Kandan, Brazilian, Cavendish, SH3618,m Goldfinger, FHIA 18 etc.
With my soil and climate (Dallas, TX) I have realized that Dwarf Namwah is the best followed by Sweetheart and then Brazilian and Kandan are ok, Mona Lisa struggles and Cavendish is a total loss. Viente Cohol hasn't made it at all, even I tried twice in a row. Have tried some FHIA 1, Gold Finger, SH3640 and FHIA 18 but they are struggling compared to Brazilian, DN and Sweetheart. |

Re: Supposed to be sweetheart...
Now the bottom of the newest leaf is somewhat red or purple, the same color as the PS, it is unfurling, so I don't know if it will stay or not... I remember reading about a banana type with red on the underside of the leaves. I tried a search to no avail.

Re: Supposed to be sweetheart...
That may possibly be a mysore. A lot of my mysore pups have a lot of red on the psuedostem when they are young.

Re: Supposed to be sweetheart...
Mysore would probably be ok. Many people say it is their favorite or at least in their top 5. I just hope it's not a plantain. Not such a big fan of them. I will eat a few if they are freshly cooked, but I would have to give away most if I had 50 lb of them.

Re: Supposed to be sweetheart...
I just looked at a few photos of the red Iholene and I don't think so... They don't have the dark burgundy PS, and mine has only begun with some red coloring under the leaves on the latest leaf.I am looking at this pup.. They seem to be all red leaf bottoms from a young age which fades with age. Cool looking when they flower, though...
