Is this a Super Dwarf Cavendish?
 

Today I went to my local Lidl supermarket and they had an offer on their plants, so I decided to buy this banana plant. It's a good job I got there when I did because it was the last one. The problem is they only labelled it as "Musa", which isn't very helpful at all! I think that it might be a Super dwarf cavendish or dwarf cavendish, but I wanted to know if anyone else would be able to help me identify it. Here are a few pictures:

It already has a pup! :D

My guess would be SDC. I'm looking at the thickness of the stem, the short petiole, and the robust overall appearance for the small size. The blood marks also indicate it should be in that same family.

Thanks for your speedy reply! I found a website on the label of the plant and when I looked on it, I found they only had one variety of banana "Musa tropicana" which I know is a made up name. And after research I found that musa tropicana is apparently another name for SDC. My plant looked the same as the one they had on their site so I think it probably is SDC.

Thanks! I really wish they would label them with their proper names, but I guess you are right, it's so they can't be blamed if they get the name wrong.

Judging by how small it is (and how compact) and the other stuff Yug mentioned, it most likely is an SDC. Since you live in England that's probably the most common variety sold anyway, as most people would have to grow them indoors as houseplants, which SDC are commonly used for. It looks really healthy though, and would benefit from a little potting up :D Congrats on getting more into the banana craze; those Velutina and Sikkimensis seedlings now have some motivation to get bigger and catch up ;)

And it's ridiculous how erroneous the information is on that website lol. Besides not being "Musa tropicana", Super Dwarf Cavendish are among one of the more quicker fruiting banana varieties when grown in proper conditions, which is what I would assume the website is talking about when it says "all tropical areas around the world". I'm really glad you're knowledgeable enough to deduce that the species it was labeled as is phony Pete(r); very ace thinking! :D

I'm thinking that 'Musa Tropicana' is a cheap rip off of the name 'Musa Paradisiaca' which I've seen applied to all types of banana cultivars that weren't species. In other words, it means very little at all. Might as well just call it a 'banana'.

So basically it still could be absolutely anything? Well I guess we will have to wait and see if it survives long enough to produce a flower. Unless there is someway to get it DNA tested lol :D

No, I don't think it is just anything - I think it is a real SDC. Just not marked that way.

Very neat! I got a flat of these back in January at out local Produce Junction and suspected they were SDC. 6 of them for 8 USD (really cheap) they are thriving now! I also have a large one (2 feet high) from a supermarket down the shore from last year. It is a thriving beauty now also.

Years ago I planted some for some job. Never did see how they turned out. And it's one of the easier plants to have that I don't have myself.

Its a super dwarf cav,that lidl love to sell,cavendish are best kept indoors in the UK,in a south facing window where temps wont drop less than 14c,you cant put this nana on hold needs to be kept growing,wont do well in summer months outside as well as our summer months are to cool.

Again, I don't think that means anything. If I wanted, I could name one Musa 'Fred' and it would carry about the same significance. I see the same thing with some orchids coming from thailand. They re-name it to something else, and sell it to unsuspecting folks that think they have something unique and different.

Actually, from everything I've seen I would disagree. Fred sells much better, but not quite as well as Derrick.

But seriously, I don't quite believe that all these differently named SDC cultivars are exactly the same. Hicolour Mini is obviously different looking as is one called 'Purple Rain'.
