Is this really Siam Ruby?
Hi all!
This is my one and only banana plant. I got it at a local store and it was grown by Black Bear Nurseries Inc. Though it is labeled Musa "Siam Ruby" it is not showing the red coloration its brothers did? Any identification would help and I would love to know what this plant is! The pictures are found here: Banana Gallery - Kbud Gallery A friend identified it as possibly 'Margarita' what do you think? Thanks, Kbud:08: |
Re: Is this really Siam Ruby?
Wow is there 3 plants in that pot? Have u ever had it outside in full sun? Siam rubys tend to lose their red colouring when light levels decrease. Also could be a margarita, which is just a chartreuse colour sport of siam ruby.

Re: Is this really Siam Ruby?
Thanks! Perhaps that's the problem, but I won't find out until I put it outside in the summer. Yes, that is three plants. With all the pups, I'll have bananas coming out of my ears! Anyone else have ideas?
Oh, and by the way, are you saying that Margarita is a type of Siam Ruby? |
Re: Is this really Siam Ruby?
It could very possibly be Siam Ruby.....they get more red with more sunlight. When being grown indoors they are often more green than red. Also, I've read that the red coloration is rather unstable and red plants often have all-green pups or green pups later change to red. I would bet when you get it outdoors for summer that it will turn nice and red for you.

Thanks! I forgot that genetics play a roll; it isn't mislabeled, it just needs sun and time.

Re: Is this really Siam Ruby?
probably what you have is what happened to me. Agristarts can't always tell which ones are going to be red, and which ones are going to stay green. The "siam ruby" sell for 4x the price of the all green ones, called margarita. But they don't always get the sorting correct, 5/18 of my last order were not the right color. So if it doesn't change, it's a margarita. That's not to say that at some point that one might throw some red pups. Some of mine did and I eventually recouped my money on them. The siams and the margaritas both pup like crazy.
