Hey everyone!
So I keep reading that most Ice Creams are not really Ice Creams. Seems like a lot of misrepresentation or poor identification going on, accidental or otherwise. I bought this from what I believe is a reputable grower (Wellspring Gardens). Does it look like a "Real" Ice cream to you? Too soon to tell? I hate to put tons of time and effort into getting fruit only to find out years later it isn't what I thought it was! It's growing well. Has nearly doubled in size since this pic. I will take a better one this weekend, but was hoping you all could give me the telltale tips to rule/rule out a true Ice Cream. Thanks! ![]() |

It is most likely the real Namwah Ice Cream that many people are very happy having, growing, and eating.. If you read "The Real Blue Java" thread you may consider yourself fortunate. Its kinda small to tell for sure since most T/C plants look the same until they grow some corm.. :^)

Yeah, 99.9% chance it's Namwah. Many people who have tried the actual thing say Namwah is better. I haven't tried Ice Cream, but I've tried Namwah and it's excellent.

I too got a "Blue JAva" that developed the red edging and therefor is probably a Namwah. But it is growing ten times faster than anything else and I love it anyway.

I have a Namwah type (Misi Luki) and a real Blue Java growing side by side. The red edges on the Misi Luki are extremely pronounced, and the growth habit is much stouter, with less erect leaves and a much thicker pseudostem. Blue Java, on the other hand, has only very faint pink margins on the leaves, a much more slender, erect growth habit, and a lot more wax on the petioles and undersides of the leaves. It is also a much greener plant with less pink in the pseudostem. Here is a comparison:
Misi Luki Namwah ![]() Ice Cream/Blue Java ![]() I will get more pictures as soon as I am able to, which unfortunately might be more than a week from now. I also suspect that Blue Java is in the Orinoco/Bluggoe subgroup rather than the Pisang Awak one, because the slight orangey color of the petiole and underside of the leaf canal on newly emerged leaves is also present on my Orinoco. Their growth habits are also similar. Although on Orinoco it is much more pronounced.

Finally managed to get some more pictures. Here's a comparison:
Misi Luki Namwah (almost the same thing as fake Ice Cream) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Blue Java/Ice Cream from Encanto Farms ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As you can see, the biggest differences are in growth habit, the petioles, and the leaf margins. Namwah is a much fatter, more open plant, and Ice Cream is very slender and upright. Also note the underside of the newly emerged leaves on Ice Cream. Once yours gets bigger, you should be able to tell the difference. Hope this clears things up. ![]()
