Drummer Questions about Dwf brazilian

In the spring I was planning to plant a raja puri in my yard but as I am pressed for space, and couldn't plant both, I was wondering which is the better banana in your opinion? Taste, hardiness, wind resistance, etc. Dwarf Brazilian is related to tall Brazilian/Manzano/apple right? Would dwarf Brazilian have the apple flavor? How tall are the crowns on both varieties?

I added both Raja Puri and Dwarf Brazilian to my collection this year and am looking for a flower late next summer. RP seems to grow faster for me but my understanding is the bananas are tiny compared to DB. The fruit on both is suppose to take a long time to mature (six vs. four months). DB are suppose to have an apple flavor to them.

Looking forward to other replies and info. on these two two plants.

Tall Brazilian and Manzano are two totally different varieties. Dwarf Brazilian is way better than Raja Puri in my humble opinion.

I've got both, and Manzano. both have fruited for me, I had a dwarf Brazilian fruit Nov. last year. didn't make it thru the winter. got raja puri fruiting now.

raja puri do better with winters but if I had a few less frosts last winter my db would have made it. dwarf Brazilian grow fast tho. almost as fast as namwa.

the db are larger fruits.

Yes, DB is called apple in Hawaii. Manzano means apple in Spanish but is a different variety. Manzano is taller with a very skinny Pseudostem that falls over ridiculously easy.

I think you understand you just can't believe it. In Hawaii Apple is one variety. In the rest of the world Manzano meaning apple in Spanish is another variety. You can look at pictures online to see what DB and Manzano fruit looks like. They are clearly different. The fruit and plants are very, very different.

Dwarfs are not supposed to be taller than 8ft. The better question is what is the height of reg. Brazilians and is your Dwf Brazilian constantly shorter than that.

In my cooler Southern California house that is only two miles from the beach (meaning low summer temps) DB only gets to 7-8' PS.

I love raja puri and Brazilian! Raja puri wins in taste to me. It’s sweeter and more tropical. Always prune the bottom 2 hands (cut them off) and it will fatten up the remaining hands! And speed up the filling time by a small amount!

Dwarf Brazilian is simply a shorter form of tall Brazilian. Tall braz also breaks in wind! 9 out of 10 falling pstems is tall Brazilian at my place. But are in the Pome subgroup AAB.

Manzano although it looks a lot alike to me, is in the silk Subgroup and a totally different variety than the pome/Brazilian. I love how Brazilian taste! Amazing! Nothing like an apple! (My tastes anyway). They are smaller than most but worth it!

In Hawaii Brazilian is called the (Apple Banana)
In South America/Caribbean Manzano is called the (Apple Banana) they can be a little “tart” i don’t care much for silk types. If they are past yellow with some brown they are ok to me.

I love pome types! My top 3 is a Pome type named Musa Virupakshi from India.

Yes, this is true. Here in Hawaii, you can go to the Farmer's Markets and everyone sells "Apple", and you can also buy "Dwarf Apple" banana trees from nurseries here locally. They are not Manzano. Manzana is the word for Apple in Spanish, but Manzano is the word used in Mexico which is what the rest of the world knows as the Apple Banana, except for here in Hawaii.

Strangely, we locally have two types "Tall Apple" (growing up to 12 feet) and "Dwarf Apple" (between 5-8 feet), both produce (not) Manzano. Both produce Cavendish what is also known as Chinese bananas here locally for the more educated banana locals. From what I know, these both are Cavendish almost Lady Finger type, and I believe whart was originally a field banana became our "Apple" banana. Whatever it is, it's extremely resistant to BBTV, and in some places, and here, it's grown exclusively where the disease is known to be rampant, because they will often grow and produce without appearing to be affected. I don't profess to know the science behind why, but I've seen fields of affected mats with our local "Apple" growing right next to it, showing no ill effects.

Not the same plants. As seen in the video Hawaiian Apples retain the bracts which is a Canvendish trait, DB do not. The DB fruit is also smaller in size. The tallest PS in my Los Angeles garden is about 7 to 8 feet depending on conditions. They are my favorite tasting banana behind PK.

I've also grown Tall Hawaiian Apple. There are photos in my gallery.
