Please identify - might be about to flower!

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to see if anyone can tell me what type of banana plant this is. I was told it could be a dwarf orinoco or a musa basjoo. But my actual musa basjoo plant looks different. I'm a little confused lol. Should I just wait until it flowers to know for sure?

Thank you!

The P stem and the leaves look too skinny to be a dwarf Orinico. The last picture looks like it's flowering. I can't tell what you have there.

Very hard to tell. It’s not a dwarf Orinoco. It could be a tall Orinoco. As soon as the flower opens take daily pictures. Or at least every 2-3 days.

It's my poor little basjoo. My dog likes to go in that corner and bark at my neighbour's dogs. I'll have to move it somewhere else next year unless it manages to get large enough to withstand him lol!

I did get a total of 5 banana plants in that clump (all in one massive pot). It's the mother plant that is about to flower (which has put out another 3 pups since separating). This tall one is one of the original pups and 3 others are planted around in other spots. I rescued it from a local nursery. They had apparently rented them out and came back in bad condition. They had cut it back and the leaves were just starting to come out when i came across them (they were all lonely in a random corner). We inquired about it and ended up purchasing them. :)

That's amazing you got it to flower in Toronto. Will you overwinter it indoors to try to actually get an edible banana next year?

That's the plan with all my bananas. I don't have a heated garage or a cold storage. I'll have to keep them in the house. It's going to get very crowded lol!

So for the one that's going to flower any day now, I don't think I will have enough time to harvest. If all goes well, do you think the bananas will be fully formed enough to cut and possible ripen indoors or hang it somewhere? Usually our first frost is sometime in late October/ early November.

You definitely won't have time to harvest them lol.
I'm in 9B California and mine just flowered this week, and I won't have time to harvest them. But please update how you make out bringing them to ripeness.

Yayy! :goteam: How long does Orinoco take to ripen under ideal conditions? Also, is this the tall variety?

Thank you!

About 90 days. .... If the pstem is 8 ft or less at the junction of the last leaf, it is considered a dwarf. Other wise it is hard to tell the difference between them.

Thank you. It is less than 8 ft. However this plant was apparently cut back before i got it.
