Bananas Brindando Plantains from PR?

Could anyone tell me exactly, or close to it, the variety of plantain (platano) it is that you purchase at the grocery store and is grown in Puerto Rico for cooking?

Thanks a bunch!!!

Josh

I wonder if the kind you get in FL are the same as those shipped to supermarkets in CA ?

Musa African Rhino Horn - Bananas Wiki

Looks like that one could get as big as the ones in the store, but there isn't any better pics on the wiki of ripe fruit (or the tree either).

Usually they are just called 'French Plantain', though there are many different forms and varieties. I doubt they are growing any horn plantains for commercial export.

Hmmm, I couldn't find one in the Wiki or elsewhere specifically called a "French Plantain," but the Dw. French plantain isn't large enough to be them. Do you know if the dwarf variety are similar in cooking? I'm trying to find one that is exact, similar, or BETTER!!!!! than the ones they sell here in the grocery stores in FL as I do a LOT of Puerto Rican cooking, and platanos are apart of 80% of meals (only beaten by rice, which is in ALL MEALS!)!!! I just moved to a more rural "redneck" city (Brevard County) from Orlando. Here they don't sell GOOD QUALITY platanos as they do in Orlando where the spanish population is MUCH higher.

Here's a link that might be helpful also. [url="http://www.worldwideplants.com/bananas.htm"]
You'll find a reference for Puerto Rican DWARF PLANTAIN under GIANT PLANTAIN.
Might be what your looking for.
