Pet names for musa varieties
I found a listing on CL for 3 varieties of pups not far from me at a good price. But do I want any of them? What is a Cuban? A fingerling? (Nice little potato IME--French (pink) is easy to grow, prolific and delicious.) Are apples always just that? Yes, I could call and ask the seller but, since those were the names he used, I doubt it would help. (If the fingerling is 1000 fingers as I suspect, he could probably confirm.)
ETA: I reread the ad for the umpteenth time and think possibly he meant apple banana Cuban and fingerling. There's a picture of fruit which is stubby like a Burro but not quite as square. Orinico? If so, got those.

Re: Pet names for musa varieties
He says the fingerlings are not 1000 fingers. Many 3" fruits but not 1000 fingers. Hmm... I'll take pictures when I go next week; hopefully some of both are flowering and not past bloom. Hehe, 2 more mysteries at the jungle...why not?

CL is good but I also like shopping flea markets for plants. Since I never believe representations as to variety, i figure if the owner raves about their taste, knows the size of fruit and can say how tall they grow, they come from their yard or their neighbors I don't mind spending $5 to $7 on a cheap thrill. BTW, Red Siam is not edible, right? He claims to have a red banana that is seedless and said it was RS.

Re: Pet names for musa varieties
Sounds exciting... Gotta love mystery plants.
Hate to ask and sorry if this is common knowledge on here but, what or who is CL?

Re: Pet names for musa varieties
Yeah, but accuracy of what you may get is not typically very good. Is it as good as eBay? Not sure. Maybe as good as Alibaba, but then Alibaba sellers are trying to deceive you. I'm not so sure they are on Craigs list. Usually just passing on Info they have, accurate or not. For instance, I've seen "Lady Finger" listed as a name.
But there are some that sound good.... if not interesting Japanese Cold Hardy banana? 8 Foot tall 1000 Finger. Wish I had more room :-)

Re: Pet names for musa varieties
Would you believe I got an order for that apple Cuban banana at a flea market? From the lady who sold me a crocodile fern (she has many neat plants). No doubt she knew it, had tasted the 3" fruit it produces and she wants it. If I'm willing to pick another up, she'd appreciate it. Heck if I get one and it pups, she wants to buy some. I told her where the seller is and directed her to CL so maybe she'll go that direction; I just collect these. But apparently pet names are well known to locals. (Darn, I wish I'd asked her about fingerlings; I'm still stumped on that one.)

Re: Pet names for musa varieties
Home with 3 of each variety. I talked with Jon for quite a while and finally got him to mention Ladyfingers as being the fingerling banana. I'm searching the forum for information about it now but anyone with experience growing it is welcome to chime in.
