My gallery.

I went by my Ace hardware today to get one of the "Grand Nain" bananas they had there. When I told the nursery guy I wanted a banana, he said he'd make me a deal if I wanted ALL the bananas.

Unfortunately, I can't resist deals. So I came home with 7 bananas and 3 angel trumpet plants. The bananas are labeled as "dwarf red" for the left 4, Grand Nain for the far right, Double for the second from right and a "??" unlabeled one third from right.

First, I don't know what a dwarf red is, even with a few searches, I don't find definitive. And I don't know what the unlabeled one is. Frankly they all look so similar... they could all be mislabeled for all I know.

But I got all 7 for $30, and they were labeled as $10 each and all have lots of green and some have little pups.

Congratulations to your new bananas and the great deal you made. It is realy a good price. 5 USD for one is perfect.
Musa "Dwarf Red" is the small form of Musa "Red". A really nice edible banana which gets red fruits. When it has direct sunligh it has a red trunk and really nice leaves.

Thank you! Some have little suckers or pups? Should I pull those away? Will they be banana plants too?

Any ideas on type for the unknown? Should I take different pictures?

It´s very diffucult to determine the species of the banana because it´s not in perfect condition. They show lack of nutrition and leaves are damaged by wind.
Pot them in bigger pots or outdoors with new good soil, care good for her and post some new images here afer while. Then determination is possible.
Yes the little suckers will become bananas, too.
Whether you should pull the suckers away from the mother plants is depending on temperatures you have at your place. When temperatures are not high enough the small auckers have problems to root.

I wouldent Cut The Peepers away , Like the fellas said.
Plant them in good soil,plenty of Sunlight And Fertilizer in the spring .

I like to cut the peepers at about 18''-2ft and plant them in another section of the Garden.

edzone, thanks, I'll leave the littles and just plant them whole.

I'm very excited about having bananas and I still have the orinoco to bring in. I bought some bags of composted manure to make certain the soil is good. I'm waiting(impatiently) to plant them this afternoon.

I would leave the pups on there....the aren't going to do any damage to the main plant or significantly slow its growth. Also, I would clean the plants up a bit by removing all the dead material as it will only hold in moisture by the pseudostem and increase the potential for rot. Just peel back the layers starting at the bottom and cutting off anything brown and work your way upward till you have exposed the living pseudostem.

Looks like you got a good deal. I don't think the Ace store around here sells bananas, or any plants.
I think the thing about not posting images, refers mainly to thumbnails. The site actually encourages you to upload pictures to your gallery, and then put them in your posting.

All planted. I'm afraid maybe I removed too much of the outer stuff. Some looked dead but when I was peeling it off, it was wet and all? Now the "dwarf red" have reddish stems! It was after dark when I was finished, so watered them well and left them to set over night. I put the unlabeled one in the middle of the yard so if it's tall, that's grand! And if it's small, that's grand too!

On another note, I forgot how much work planting large pots is! I'm exhausted already, and still have to feed pythons tonight.

Well I took pictures of the planted bananas, but the site won't let me upload them. The page just switches to "pictures uploaded" but they aren't and it never gives me that page that you hit the "submit" button to actually upload them.

Edit: I uploaded using my iPhone.

They don't look droopy or anything yet today, I watered them last night.

So they're all in the ground as of last night, I stripped off the dead stuff(I hope not too much) and will hover over them. Since one wasn't labeled, I named it Frank.

Not entirely sure, and it could just be environmental, but I though mahoi's had a green p-stem. They all kinda look like a GN or DRs. Then again I live in Canada and am the opposite of an expert.

Yep, I'm unsure on any of them. That's why I put the ? because it's what the label said, but hey, could be anything.

Tomorrow I shall go get my first Orinoco.

I love this Ace, I go in anytime I feel like planting and ask the nursery guy "What do you have on clearance?" and usually go home with 100 plants for $10. They often get rid of things like snapdragons as soon as the blooms fall off. But snapdragons rebloom in a month, bigger and more than the first. But that's a month they sit on shelves taking up space, so the place wants them gone. Bingo. I get them for next to nothing.

I also stop when the landscapers are ripping out old plants and replanting the decorative area in the front of the shopping center where I work. They are happy to help me load the entire bed of my pick up in perfectly good plants that I can replant in my yard and watch turn into gorgeous landscaping for FREE. I got a pickup truck bed completely filled and mounded up with snapdragons after the first bloom died, plus several other kinds of plants at various times. I stopped counting snaps after the first thousand. Gave them away to a bunch of friends, plus neighbors, plus family and still planted 800 in my front yard.

Gotta love free.

This happens when bananas are nitrogen deficient. They probably hadn't been fertilized in a long time. They'll green up eventually if you've fertilized them.

The Grand Nain(and behind it, the Double?). The stalk looks way less red than when I planted it. The dwarf reds all still look very red, Frank is not nearly as red either. I uploaded pics to show how they look today.

Does this mean they're recovering and doing well or not? I haven't gotten Orinocos because of the weather turning.
