Namwah or Dwarf Namwah ?

Probably the dwarf one. This is me harvesting the tall version. I'm standing in the back of a 4WD pick-up.

Now that I look back at pictures I'm not so sure. My dwarf Nam Wahs looked to be in the 7-8' range. The tall ones, I just remember being a lot taller. I figure the bed of my truck is probably 3' off the ground and I am 6' tall. So maybe that plant is 10-11' tall. But then again I have been on other farms where I couldn't reach the male flower with my arms up. In Mayaguez, the Pisang Awak, which is basically a tall nam wah, was 4.5m tall. I don't know now. That picture is 3 years old, I may have cut the pseudostem to bend it down.

The pseudostem appears to be a dwarf to me, but this is my first Namwah.

I have no idea how Florida Hill Nursery knew I wanted a Namwah when I ordered a Tall Super plantain, but that's what makes them special.

This t/c was planted in the middle of June, so planting to bloom was about 8 1/2 months.

Nick, does the male bud reach ground level with a 7' Dwarf, and how long does it take for the bud to open ?

The tip of the bud is 5' 4" above the ground and no fruit showing yet.

I'm envious of your quick growth. The male bud, in my experience, does not reach ground level. The bud should start to open shortly once it is fully extended. If the tip of the bud is 5'4" above ground with no fruit showing, I'm pretty sure you have a dwarf because the tall ones I couldn't even touch when they fruited.

Don't be envious, you know exactly what I'm doing, just try it.

I expect to improve on the time when I plant in the ground and add a barrel.

This was only a test in a 5' x 4' x 8" pot, and zero fertilizer.

My next test will be with the Hua Moa in a similar pot, another one in a weevil infested old mat, and undecided on where the third one goes.

What I need is your weather and unfortunately I can't move that up here. It's 63 degrees at my house today. I don't know what has happened but apparently February and March got reversed, because it was pretty warm in February.

Re: Namwah or Dwarf Namwah ?

I would guess it is a tall Namwah, and not the dwarf based on the info and photos so far. If you can post a picture of the entire plant it will help though. My tall Namwah types typically fruit in their first generation at about 8-12ft, and then reach up to about 15-20ft by the 3rd and 4th generation. I have never grown the dwarf to fruiting, but in my experience seeing many of the plants on other farms, they have typically been very short, 5-8ft max.

Re: Namwah or Dwarf Namwah ?

First generation means the first time a plant fruits, first ratoon refers to the second from the same plant, or the "second generation". As the plant gets older and especially if the mat is not pruned, the generations start blending together, but it is normally more clear and differentiated in the first 1-3 generations.

For me in Hawaii 'Williams' only takes 4 months to develop after flowering, but there are many different microclimates in Hawaii, so someone could have been reporting about growing at a higher elevation or something like that.

For me as I've said before, Williams has always taken 6 months but I'm only talking about 6 bunches ever and they've always been during the winter months. Although I'm at sea level where I live is a few degrees cooler with much more cloud cover than where Gabe is. I wait to harvest until at least one fruit I yellow. I've had Gros Michel take a bit under 5 months but that was a spring/summer bloom and we get 2 more hours of sun that time of year vs the mid winter.

The only thing I dislike about Namwah is that it tends to be corky in the center.

I'd eat a whole bunch if I found money on the inside of each one like shown in the pics. :ha:
