Namwah?
Hi experts,
My mystery naner is fruiting. I grabbed a ladder and climbed up to get a pic of the babies. This is a pup from last year. The mother plant died during hurricane Irma last year. It is exactly 12' pstem. I've been trying to ID it since another pup fruited back in July. I got The World of Bananas in Hawaii last month and read this when studying up Namwah: Individual fruit stalks (pedicels) of very young fruit Pisang Awak are colored a beautilful red, an excellent id trait. Are there other's with this trait? My dwarf namwah fruited in Aug and they had the same. The difference between my mystery and namwah was that the mystery bananas are darker green than the pale green of my verified namwah. Then there was the size. The namwah flowered at 9' 7" pstem. Another difference is the number of pups. The mystery just keeps pumping them up where the namwah only has a few. Could my mystery banana be a tall namwah (pisang awak)? Here's the pic: Another question is size between dwarf and tall namwah. I read different heights on different sites. Some say dwarf is 8-10' and others say shorter. Tall from 10-15'. What are the averages you guys have seen on these? Cheers and thanks for looking! Todd |

Re: Namwah?
It very likely is. Though I haven't seen the reddish blossom end tips before. It's very pretty.
I have "dwarf" and "Tall" Nam Wah, and heights, as it is with most varieties, vary. Right now I have "tall" Nam Wah that are fruiting at a shorter height than my dwarfs. The best way to distinguish true dwarfs of any variety from standards is their looks. Not by measuring their height. Which is too variable. Dwarfs have that look to them. And most dwarfs tend to put out larger bunches.
