My plant has a flower!!!!.....but what species is it?
3 Attachment(s)
I've got a banana plant that was bought in Tenerife ~7yrs ago and has been growing in my (not that warm!) room ever since. This summer it's produced a flower - I'm very excited! :D
I was just wondering if anybody could help me identify what sort of banana plant it is? Also, is there anything I can do to help it produce its bananas, or is it too late now? (I'm afraid it's not had a great life so far - it probably needs a bigger pot, more fertiliser & a warmer climate.....!) Any identification/help much appreciated - I don't know much about banana plants but am keen to learn! Thanks! |

Is there any way you can post larger pictures please? I could barely see it! They are pretty dark too. Could you take some more pictures, with better lighting? Thanks.

I know the photos are rubbish - sorry. I tried to upload some better ones via the gallery but it keeps saying they're not in a valid format. They're .bmp files so I don't know quite why...I'll give it another go though.
..... Managed to change the file type & get them uploaded - better pics in my gallery! |
Re: My plant has a flower!!!!.....but what species is it?
That is an unusual blossom, so someone ought to recognize it. The leaves are fairly distinctive as well. How tall is the plant? Is there any red on the stem or leaves?

Re: My plant has a flower!!!!.....but what species is it?
It's not that tall - maybe 1.5m? I suspect it's a bit stunted though - as I said, it lives in a pot in my bedroom. I'm from Scotland so not ideal for banana growing really!
Just to complicate matters, I'm not actually at home at the moment and won't be til next week....from memory however, it has some red, particularly at the bottom of the stem. The leaves are just green, I think. |

I've added some new images to my gallery - better quality photos of the more mature flower. Here's one below:
Also, in my first hand of bananas there is one banana which seems to be developing faster than the rest - is this normal? Will the rest catch up later or might I just end up with the one proper banana? |
