Default Musa Buffalo Horn

Hi,

I bought two Musa Buffalo Horn at Achim's Bananenshop and took them to Brazil, one of the two survived and got new leaves in Brazil in my new yard.

But Achim told me, there are many banana cultivars with many different alias names. E. g. Banana Roxa is one alias name for Red, Figo one alias name for Orinoco, Prata for Brazilian

Achim got Buffalo Horn for his shop, as one hardy fruit banana, but surely not as hardy as basjoo.

Are there alias names for Buffalo Horn? Who also knows Buffalo Horn? African Rhinohorn? Or Golden Rhinohorn???

If Buffalo Horn is one African Rhinohorn, it will be exciting in Brazil!

Best wishes
Joachim

Well, I've never head of 'Buffalo Horn' but it sounds strangely similar to 'African Rhino Horn' so that's a possibility. Don't take my word as any legitimate source...just a thought. Here is the wiki page for African Rhino Horn.

If you get some pictures of the plant, its leaves, pseudostem, etc maybe some of the experts can identify it...but it might have to be older and/or flower for ultimate identification.

I have not heard of the name outside of the plants being sold with no information about them.

Common names are extremely variable and should not be totally relied upon for identification. The only (easy) way to know what plant you really have if you don't have anything to base it on is to grow it out and have enough knowledge and resources to be able to determine what it is based on its morphology.

I too think that Buffalo Horn is just a misinterpreted name of African Rhinohorn. Those plants on his website's pictures seemed very waxy, were they so waxy also after you saw them with your own eyes?

Yes, but my plant was still small in Brazil. As I left it on 9th January, it had only one leaf and one spear, it was came back after outplanting. I will look after it in April and will take one new photo of it, then I will post the photo here in April or May. When the plant is larger, then I will make more photos to let identify here.

Best wishes
Joachim

I put some of my pictures just now in the wiki, check it again please:
Musa African Rhino Horn - Bananas Wiki
Some are from after it bloomed, and one is from when it was just a pup. Hope it helps to either eliminate it from your options or maybe lead you closer to a positive identification
I put close up photos of the flowers also. Best regards.

LOL, the difference between one buffalo and rhino.

Yes, thanks, MediaHound, I will look at the plant in April in Brazil, thanks for the pic of the plant in the juvenile age. Spotted leaves and partially reddish petioles. If still unclear, then I will wait some years, then the plant will fruit in my new yard.

Pic of my pup in January

Best wishes
