Looking for any info on a banana that I saw on youtube

Hello Fellow banana growers. I was browsing youtube the other day when I came across a banana that was described as tasting like strawberry shortcake from Malaysia. The video is here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEU_uLJqdyc and there was a thread on this on here somewhere but for the life of me I cannot find it. Apparently I am not using the correct keywords. If this is in the wrong forum let me know.

Hello Starstryke,

That's the Pisang Keling, which I have read is "one" of those varieties that many consider to be the best tasting banana in the world.

Synonyms include:
Latundan - https://www.crop-diversity.org/mgis/...isang-keling-0 (not sure about this as I thought the Latundan was a different type)
Pisang Ceylon/Ceylan - https://www.daleysfruit.com.au/Banan...-acuminata.htm
Mysore - M.M.P.N.D. - Sorting Musa cultivated varieties (cultivars) names

That last link has about 15 or so synonyms in total under the Mysore listing.

Hope you can find a pup somewhere. I've never had the pleasure of trying it myself, but I'm pretty sure I'd be impressed.

Edit:
Link to thread here on the Pisang Keling: http://www.bananas.org/f2/pisang-kel...tml#post308417
This has a link to an info page on it: Musa Mysore - Bananas Wiki

PS Just an enthusiast but not an expert by any stretch, so I'm sure other forum users here would be able to add to this.

Mysore has a good taste, but is quite small. Tangy and sweet. I don't think I would describe it as strawberry cheesecake.
I had an entire bunch of mysore at the same time as a bunch of Paggi and tried both. I can tell you we didn't touch the Mysore again until Paggi was gone.

Came across Paggi in my search for Keling. It's on my list but the only source I have found so far was hit by hurricanes this year so that one is on the back-burner.

Ty, you have pisang keling? Although its listed as a synonym for latundan, that is also a different banana. I'm chasing a taste report on the real thing the diploid pisang keling. This and nino enano seem to be popular and I'm considering importing them.

I will do that Tytaylor, the weather here has not dropped past 50 F for quite a while and it's making me want to plant more bananas...

I do have Pisang Keling. It’s another word for Mysore. I have a generic Mysore which came from a member, also have Pisang Ceylon from Going Bananas FL, and finally Misi Luki from a member. This will be the first year in ground for all 3. Hopefully they make it and i will see flowers next summer.

Of the 3, Misi Luki grew the best. All 3 did great though.

Dwarf Nino is an amazing grower. I have several in ground that were at fruiting height for 2 good months. Still no flower. As with other AA types i expect them to grow much better once established next year and the year after. We will see. Nino is an amazing little super sweet banana. I love them.

I have pisang Ceylon. I am hoping to get latundan after Christmas, but the pics on crop diversity show latundan, pisang keling and pisang ceylon as different. The pic of latundan and pisang keling are very different. Will be interested to see which yours matches.

I am curious about your pisang keling as well as from my searches it seems like their is probably a naming error somewhere between the imports.

So latundan is silk/manzana and pisang keling is mysore? Okay I've never heard mysore described like that, is mysore a group as well as a variety? Maybe it has different flavour to the usual. The one I'm getting then will be silk/manzana for sure.

Yes, Mysore is a subgroup as well as a specific variety. A source I think is reliable lists Pisang Keling as a Malaysian synonym for Mysore, as was stated earlier in the thread.

I wouldn't describe Mysore bananas as tasting like strawberry shortcake, but I do get the berry reference. They are my favorite for flavor, because I like the tartness that offsets the sweetness.

Update for this, finally talked to an ebay seller in Thailand . They pointed me to this listing https://www.ebay.com/itm/Musa-AAB-gr....c100227.m3827 . I ordered so hopefully it gets here alive and it's the real thing. Couple of different names on that listing but apparently not Latundan.

I will be interested to see how this goes. Do you have a mysore for comparison? Im still not fully convinced this is just a mysore with another name.

Probably not at this time. Should not be difficult to find one when the weather warms up but this winter killed a few of mine.

The photos on eBay sure look like Mysore.

Hello all,

From what I have read, Pisang Keling/Ceylan is considered a type of Mysore and also referred to as an "improved Mysore" due to a stronger p-stem.

I hope that helps.
