In my cruising around trying to find information about identifying banana types, I found this:
AgEcon Search: Item 118448 It is a copy of the Ausie publication "Illustrated Guide to the Identification of Banana Varieties in the South Pacific". I have not had a chance to do more than acquire it. It may or may not be helpful. But, I assume it would be something any banana nut would want in their banana archive. EDITS: Here are other publications that might be of interest: http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/UHMG/dow...nanas_ADSC.pdf http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/nelsons/...nymsHawaii.pdf I will add more as I run across them Last edited by voyager : 11-29-2013 at 01:58 PM. Ditto! It's a great book, even if you don't live in Hawaii.

Banana Bonanza Story by Jon Letman Photos by Elyse Butler There’s an ancient Hawaiian story that tells of the banana field of Kahuoi growing deep in Maui’s Waiho‘i Valley. The legend, recorded by nineteenth-century ethnologist Abraham Fornander, claims that the patch was so large that it would have been impossible to walk around it without a guide... Thanks for the pointers to banana literature. I have always been a rabid book collector and collect everything I can find about my latest interests. Since the invasion of computers into my life, it has also included digital tomes.
I have ordered "...Bananas in Hawaii ...", using the discount code [only $10 now, but $10 is $10]. I have made a PDF from the Hawaiian Air mag article and attached it for anyone interested. Thank you folks. |

Glad you're both enjoying it. Mine hasn't been put away in 2 years. I had the pleasure of meeting the authors last year. Ms. Kepler has written quite a few excellent books on plants in Hawaii.

There is a wealth of information in that book. It'll take more than 1 perusal to glean the info I want from it.
I'm slowly but surely getting my banana plants cleared of the overgrowing weeds. Three of the groupings are done and not in all that bad of shape. The 4th is pretty sickly. I've still got more to do to get that last group cleaned up. I'm thinking of replanting them in another location. We'll see when I finally get to where I can see all the plants and assess their viability. I'm afraid that only the keikis will be of any use. Yesterday's rain storm kept me from getting anything done. Today, financial matters took precedence, maybe tomorrow I can get back to work on them again. |

It's a great reference source. I refer to it for information all the time. I read it cover to cover originally, but now it is a go-to reference.
