Identifying my banana plant

I need help identifying my banana plant. I purchased it from a farmer market, and the seller didn't know the name of it. I trying to find out also if my plant will product bananas that are edible.

I don't think your picture has enough detail or pixels for someone to take a educated guess.

Usually its hard to tell that early. But maybe some of the truely good experts like Gabe could narrow it down to a few varieties for you.

It looks like a Blue Java. Put in a pot at least twice that size with good soil and you'll see it grow. :^) The roots will be restricted a pot that small. :^)

I'd wait for a master to chime in.
Your pot is what you may put a SDC Banana in. Once roots reach maximum density the plant won't get any taller, so what you'd really like to have it in a 18 inch pot, and maybe a 30 gallon next summer, if not the growth will be stunted by the pot and the likelihood of getting banana bounty is reduced, and that's not a pleasant experience (ask patty). :^)

How can you tell?
I was also told it was a blue java/ice cream.

Just want to know for sure and any advice for newbie in growing it in pot, fertilizer, etc?

Ice cream has a more of a waxy blue-green stem. Mysore or pisang celylon (improved mysore) have a blush stem and midrib. As the plant matures the undersides of the leaves will have a slight purple coloration.

If you have the ceiling space I'd grow it in a 25 gallon pot or larger with jungle growth potting mix from Lowes. If you are leaving it potted outside a mix of jungle growth and composted cow manure would be a good choice as well. Once the plant gets established you can generously fertilize with a liquid fertilizer such as scotts or miracle grow.

There is to much red on the p-stem petioles, and a dark pink midrib for a ice cream.

I also think it's way too young to tell for sure what it is. I my opinion, the pot it's in is fine for now, though as Michael mentioned, if you plant to keep it in a pot you'll eventually need a much bigger one. You have to be careful putting it in too large of a pot when the plant is small as the soil can retain too much water and cause root rot. Personally, I'd keep it in that pot for a few weeks and see how it does. I used to live in KY, so I know you'll be reaching the end of your summertime temps before too much longer so you may even be able to get it through winter in that pot. Come spring you can decide whether to pot it up into something larger or plant it in the ground.

Cast my vote for Ice Cream/Blue Java. Then again, it's awfully small for a positive identification. Just a guess at this point.
