It is actually not pure M. velutina, but a hybrid. You can obviously see its alliance to M. velutina, but some key differences are the smooth fruit (M. velutina fruit is hairy like velvet), the fruit is somewhat vertical, slender and curved (M. velutina fruit is more horizontal, very squat and rounded), and the male bud becomes more developed (M. velutina male bud dehisces early and never gets well developed).

The name M. velutina has also been restored and choose to be kept over M. dasycarpa recently.

This is pure M. velutina
