Home Depot Bananas...

I picked these up from Home Depot today... Both are labeled "Musa Banana Red Abyssinian"...

Question: Are they the same species???

The leaves are different in that the taller tree has red splotched on like a Zebrina, and the shorter tree starts red at the center, and flows to green in the center, and then back to red at the edges...

You should be able to see the difference in the p-stem from the picture...

Thanks in advance,

Michael

I can tell that this is not a Basjoo... I know what the label says, but that's all I know for sure...

I would say left is E. ventricosum maurelii (also called red abyssinian banana) and right is zebrina/sumatrana/blood banana (has a bunch of names)....so basically 'I agree' LOL.

The one on the right has pups... doesn't home depot know ensetes don't pup? lol.
Someday someone out there will mislabel AeAe's as basjoos... I will grab one and let you all know where the rest are. : )

If only we could get that lucky...

lol, AeAe's as Basjoos. . . They'd make a ton of money and a ton of unhappy customers. A lot of people would snatch them up due to their beauty then kill them unaware of their complete lack of cold tolerance.

To be honest, I highly doubt most of their employees working in that department know anything about bananas. I've even been to greenhouses that sold several types of bananas and even they didn't know anything about them. They were all labeled something generic like 'musa red banana' or 'musa banana' depending on whether they were siam ruby/ensete maurelii or varieties without red on them. I expected them to at least know something they could tell me about them, but they really didn't. Even had ensetes labeled as 'musa.'
