Good evening everyone.

Here's the scoop, these banana plants were given to me approx 2 years ago from an elderly woman. I planted them near my pond but I actually mowed over them the last couple of summers.

I let them grow this year after I got growing banana bug a month or so ago.

While talking talking to her grand daughter yesterday I asked Oh did those banana plants your grandmother give me ever make bananas, her reply oh yea every year the one by her old house made bananas.

I asked where the ones I recieved came from she said oh some of the little one from that plant Mama never bought anything like that someone gave her the banana plant in the 40's

So...............What the heck do you folks think they are? See Pics

Oh also the pic below is supposed to be a plantain, that was given to me from Nursery Employee who removed it from someones home. Any help identifying it would be appreciated also.

Well, I didn't want to open mouth - insert foot. Also, those are rather young to be trying to figure out what they are. They look like they are growing very well.

If I was going to hazard a 'very' premature guess, I'd say Blue Java based on the grey/waxy look of the underside of the leaf, but it really is too soon to tell.

The lack of responses probably just means the same thing - its too early to tell. Not many young plants exhibit characteristics distinct enough to make a determination of the type.

Good guess, the underside pic does look very typical of that "Blue Java" bluish-green lustre typical of the underside of their leaves.
That's about the closest I'd care to come to making a guess though, it's a "maybe" Blue Java.
You could do a lot worse than an Orinoco though, too!

Too early to tell. It is very waxy. Looks a lot like the Cardaba pup I have.

If it really is a 'Blue Java', then according to the Wiki it is somewhat cold-tolerant, and does well in zones 8-10. You are in zone 9, so that you are right in the middle of the range, and it ought to do fine. Again, that depends on if it really is the 'Blue Java', so don't take that as 'gospel'.

(and if it does turn out to be a 'Cardaba', instead; that one also grows in zones 8-10, so it would still be OK)

As a general rule of thumb, the varieties with closed petiole canals, which is usually indicative of lots of B genes (Musa balbisiana), do best of the edible bananas in cooler than tropical places, e.g., S. Louisiana. That plant should grow well for you, whatever it is.
