fruit ripe while green?
A shy man passed some bananas over the fence to me yesterday and then left. They were dark green but as they felt soft, I tried one. Delicious, ripe with pale orange flesh and medium size, but dark green peel - anyone come across these? I know where to find my benefactor and after I have reviewed my spanish grammar, I will go and try to get a pup from him. Recently I saw a man in town with interesting looking fruit, but couldn't get the other half to stop the car - darn!! I advertised locally for different banana varieties as I know they are out there, but got no responses - can you believe it!!! No - I am not going mad - I am a woman on a mission so be afraid, be very afraid!!

I have had these. They are fantastic, but I don't know what they're called.

Re: fruit ripe while green?
Well - in about 18 months time when I can take pics of my yet to be acquired plant flowering, then perhaps we can identify it. I have recently found out that the locally named rulos are in fact orinoco, and I have both the dwarf and intermediate sizes in flower/fruit. Drives me mad not knowing what varieties plants are!!!

Re: fruit ripe while green?
We have a banana in the Philippines that ripens green. It is one of the few dessert bananas that have thick skins, like the ones sold in the grocery stores. The difference from your description is that "Bungulan", as we call them, becomes a little lighter green, not dark. Probably, the same shade of green as the Granny Smith apple from New Zealand (not Washington State, which has a blush of red).
In HI and PR, this same variety is called "Monte Cristo". If you can envision the ripe grocery banana with a soft green skin, that would be like the Bungulan. It is super sweet. |

Re: fruit ripe while green?
Thanks for the information Chong - I have to go back to the UK tomorrow for 2 weeks, but after that I will try to get a pup of this banana. It did lighten slightly but was still definitely green - and the skin was normal, not thin or thick but the flesh was light orange. Not super-sweet though! Watch this space!!!
