Is this a basjoo?
For years now this Musa species has been growing in the greenhouse at the little zoo (Welkom bij Papegaaienpark Veldhoven) where I work on sundays.
I always presumed they're normal Musa basjoo, but now that they're in flower I'm not so sure,....the color of the flower is a bit different. Anyone got an idea what it may be? I'm planning to plant some other species there to see how big they wil get. Kind regards, Remko. |

Re: Is this a basjoo?
Thank you for the quick reply Markku!
That clears this mystery up The different varieties of basjoo have not been named yet right? We'll see what the future brings on the study on basjoo. Kind regards, Remko. |

Re: Is this a basjoo?
Hi Remko,
The naming of different varieties of M.basjoo from China is under work. The problem is that the plant(s) which was introduced from China to Japan in ancient times has evolved during that time in to different varieties compared the original ones in China. The M.basjoo plants in Europe / USA are the Japan's origin. How tall your plants are? Have you checked if there are any seeds? Best wishes, Markku. |

Re: Is this a basjoo?
I did check in the past for seeds, but nothing so far.
The total plants are about 3.5 to 4 meters high, maybe higher, it's hard to tell really. I'll try and measure them one day. Kind regards, Remko. |

Hi Remko,
Thanks for your notes! How many individual M.basjoo plants you have or do they are in the same mat? Best wishes, Markku. |

Re: Is this a basjoo?
Hi Gilbert,
Your bleu banana must be Musa itinerans as all M.basjoo varieties has clumbing habits. By the way what Ensetes you have in your area? I am especially very intersting to locate Ensete homblei which is origin from your area. Markku. |
