Default Banana leaf

This might be a dumb question, but here it goes. When the leaf/steam breaks or needs to be cut, do you cut it all the way down to where it come out of the ground? Is there a special way of doing it?

Cutting the leaf where it meets the pseudostem(trunk) would be the best.

Does it hurt the plant to cut off about half the length of the leaves. I have a tree that gets really trashed from strong winds. So, I have clipped off the longer leaves...to prevent the winds from damaging the tree.

It won't hurt it, but banana leaves tear naturally so that they can with stand wind and not break or topple the plant(unless the wind is really strong).
