Default Banana ID (received from neighbor)

I picked some pups from a neighbors yard and they have now grown and have fruit. I am not sure what type they are.

Tree is probably 10-12 feet and has a large base of appx 9 inch diameter. Here is a picture of the fruit:

Let me know what you think or where to start.

They appear to be a type of Pome, also commonly known as Brazilian.
There are many different cultivars so it's hard to say what the exact name might be, but that's the general type.

About the closest match I've seen so far in the TARS banana catalog is the Pisang Awak ABB. The fruit is almost identical and the description matches. Is this type considered a Pome?

Here is a picture of the fruit from the catalog.

It says it is common in south Florida so the chances of making it to Puerto Rico is high.

Thoughts and comments are appreciated!

No, you do not have a Pisang Awak. Perhaps you don't have this exact cultivar, but it should be more like this one: https://npgsweb.ars-grin.gov/gringlo...spx?id=1918646. Can you post a photo of the male bud?

High are you doing Senor Pavo!.....

This is HMelendez again!...As you mentioned the TARS Musa catalog is one of the most useful tools!...

Pome are in the AAB variety......Pisang Awak "aka" Namwah is a ABB variety...a different variety classification....

Namwah is one of the most common/growing banana cultivars in Florida!....

Then you got the Dwarf and the Tall Namwah (Pisang Awak) varieties!....

Hopefully it helps, my friend!....

Male bud and flower

Oddly enough Foconah doesn't appear in the TARS banana catalog.

Still looks good to me for some type of Pome. Does your neighbor have any name for them?

Yep. Calls em guineos.
The bigger ones are platanos.

A lot of people don't take it much further than that...lol

Oh and thanks all for the information on the pome subgroup. News to me. "The fruit bunch develops at an angle while the rachis points vertically down. The fruit apex is often bottlenecked."

That would definitely describe these.
