ok, my first post. im not having luck inserting my pic or getting this to actually post on the board.

anyway, i havre a banana purchased as 'royal pink'. it produces runners some distance from the main clump. it is very freeze tolerant, the trunks never froze this winter.

i does favor another variety i have seen, but i would like to get additional opinions. check out my member gallery for the pic.

That is a very particular feature of M. laterita or mislabeled "musa ornata bronze". I'm particularly looking to get one from Gabe in the near future.
At first it looks like a normal banana plant, with a hint of pink in the stem. when it flowers, the flower is a brick-red/orange, the bananas are green, and the bunch stays heading up. I've been told if you have multiple of these flowering one a couple days after the other they can cross-polinate and produce edible bananas, but can't assure that. Just my 2 cents.

Well I know Gabe tried laterita fruit when we were at the Denver Botanic Garden afew weeks back. I am not sure how he liked them, and whether they were truly edible in the sense that you would want to eat more than one. They were tiny, so you'd have to eat several bunches to fill you up. I know he liked the jaboticaba. :03:

I have grown these for about ten years and frequently have multiple blooms and whereas they produce bananas (with or w/o multiple blooms) I have yet to see any edible pulp. Just my experience; which will vary significantly based on climate (maybe in a true tropical climate you will get edible pulp).
