Hiya Yes I Have No Bananas.... Yet

Hi Everyone

I have come here to investigate growing bananas in my back yard! I live in southern Oregon (Ashland) where it freezes into the teens and 20's in winter and gets above 100 deg F for a couple weeks in August/September.

We get 18" of rain on average. I have a small water course in my back yard where cattails grow vigorously.

A friend of mine just came from a seminar... the man says "bananas can be grown ANYWHERE" (!)

I'm here to find out!!!

Thanks --- Charlie

Welcome Charlie!

Your friend is right, you can grow bananas anywhere, but with certain precautions. Esp., if you want to grow edible bananas. There are a few that are cold hardy in your area, Zone 7, according to the USDA.

Musa Basjoo and Mussella Lasiocarpa can thrive in your area with minor winter protection. They are considered ornamental ornamental in that they fruits they produce have seeds in them. CA Gold is the most touted cold hardy banana, as is the TX Star. And with a lot of heavy winter protection, they may survive your area. These two have been reported to be from the Dwarf Orinoco Family. And my D. Orinoco seedlings have survived winters in Seattle with some protection. Though because of the cool summers, they have been slow to grow. If you have warm summers they will definitely thrive better there than here.

Most of the banana growers who want to play it safe, dig out their plants, and overwinter them inside the house or garage that not subject to freezing temperatures. There are a few threads on this subject and some have very informative pictures.

Have fun!
