Why am I here?
Because I love eating bananas, period. So, I live near Akron, OH, and will be growing outdoors in the summer and indoors in the winter, starting out with one or two plants. Could someone save me a whole lotta time and tell what to buy, and I'll get started right away! Thanks!

Re: Why am I here?
A few follow up questions will help.
What are you indoor arraignments? Do you plan to have them grow in the winter or go dormant? I am just south west of you in central Ohio. I move mine inside to the basement and have grow area set up for the winter. They don't grow much as it is too cold for much growth there but they tend to stay alive. I have debated adding a heater to bring it up to a balmy 82-85 down there. Keys to watch for are don't over water in the winter. Someothers here will disagree with me but have found fabric smart pots to be very effective for overwinter. My success rate with them is 90+% each year. With plastic pots I get about a 65% success rate. My advice is start with ones that fit the space you have and go from there. I have multiple varieties from super dwarf to dwarfs to more giant varieties. You can truly have pretty much whatever kind you want!!!! |

Re: Why am I here?
Start with cold hardy Musa basjoo. Plant it outdoors and it will come back year after year.
For an indoor/outdoor variety, you can't go wrong with dwarf Cavendish. It's compact and will fruit in a couple of years in your scenario. BTW, welcome aboard! |
