... Literally in about three months! Hi, I have been lurking this site for most of the summer now and have learned a lot about bananas. I come from Zone 5b, Canada. I have some Dwarf Cavendish right now but I am desperately trying to acquire something more interesting... not an easy task in Canada ( we generally get dc, sdc, hcm, blood banana & basjoo). My Local Nursery has a seven foot 'Ice Cream'...but they want a $150 for it... ya right!. Anyways you probably won't see me post a whole lot unless it is a question on Northern Banana growing. Thanks all for making my workday a lot better; before I found this site I could only enjoy seeing banana plants in the Caribbean.

The other side of Toronto from you , Cobourg , it that's the right spelling. Well my Mother and Sister live in Cobourg my Brother is a bit closer to you but I forget the name of the town. We will be passing by in the Spring . It's about 9 hours drive from here , 12 hours with kid stops :-)

Crazy canuck,

I am new here, and a complete novice. I am contemplating a Musa Basjoo banana, here in Rockwood, Ontario ... just down the road from you (towards Acton). I am on the map. We are in to Guelph almost every day.

I love the tropical look, and have been successful growing brugmansia, and of course castors.

I am wondering if the Musa Basjoo will survive in ground in our area ( Canadian zone 5 ), or alternately, if it can go dormant in my cold cellar ( where I keep my brugs ) or my wine cellar ( where I keep my cannas). Any thoughts?

I was contemplating putting it on the south east corner of the house where it would get some protection from the wind, as we have a wind tunnel that comes up from the river between my house and my neighbours' house. Thus it would get direct sun from sun up until mid afternoon. I had brugs there last year and they grew quite tall, but thought that it would make for a nice "statement".

Is it too early to set them out yet?

Do you have any spare pups for the Musa Bagoo? I tried to contact Corolla Tropicals in Toronto, but they have not responded back. A friend has promised me one also, but no definite plants have been made for it as of yet.

If you are of a vintage to remember "The Band", you will recall the piano player was Richard Manuel. He went to our church, and as soon as the service was over, he would go to the piano and "boogie". That drove a lot of the older folks out the door a little quicker, but I loved it.

Hi Duke;

I have had my Bananas out for about 3 weeks although I stood ready to put them in the garage if the temps got close to freezing.

I had originally planned to put them in the ground this spring and keep a heated shelter around them for the winter. My experience overwintering Palms has made me reconsider. While I have a month or so to make up my mind, I think that I will put them in 24" pots now, leave them out over summer and put them under light in the basement to keep them growing over winter. Our spring weather is too erratic to make keeping bananas out side feasible. We need to start venting heat as early as the beginning of March but need overnight protection from frost as late as Mid May.

I had winds gusting to 80 Kms come from an unusual direction and shred my M. Basjoo and my dwarf cavendish. The Rajapuris were shorter with smaller leaves and sturdier stems. They sustained little damage. All are alive but ugly.
