Re potting/babies!
Hi!
So I have had mine for two years now and I repotted him once (which to be honest I thought he was gonna die because he really didn't appreciate my repotting skills) but he has four suckers, the other two are getting so big now they're blocking the light to the two smaller ones and their not doing so great. I read online that you have to cut the suckers off with a knife when you re pot them, but only to re pot them in spring as well? I'm in the UK so its pretty cold here rn, overall I think he's pretty healthy but I was hoping you would have some advice as to what to do when I reach the repotting stage and how to get the babies off? I'm so scared I'm going to kill him especially after the fit he threw when I just repotted him! Because the last time I did, he had a big root ball of soil and even though I tried to loosen it, (which also was another reason why it took him ages to be okay) but If I need to cut the suckers off how am I going to do that with a root soil ball?? Also, something online said that when you remove the babies then the mother plant will die? Is this true? Or will removing and repotting the suckers just be the same as when you re pot a normal plant? Feels like im prepping for some serious surgery Hope you can help! |

First off, welcome aboard the Banana Express. I'm not an expert on bananas by any means, but I did grow some a few years back, which is why I'm on here. Removing pups will NOT hurt the main plant! In fact, removing them will allow more growth to go to the main plant. My clumps will not fruit, but if I get rid of them, the single plant will. To transplant, I just chonk them off with a shovel and stick them in the ground. This time of year, just take the corms themselves and get rid of the plant. Put them in a pot in bring indoors for the winter, and let them get going. I'm sure someone on here with more knowledge than myself, will be able to give you further instructions. Now, if you have any questions about dawn redwoods, hit me up!
