I am a development worker in the philippines and i have a client that inquire about the rotting banana steam in their farm could anybody suggest control or treatment because my client is willing to pursue the banana plantation despite my advice to shift to jackfruit (Arthocarpus heterophyla)

if it is only bugs easier to treat..if it might be fungal or some sort of blight well that might be a little more difficult..hows about a few pics

It's possibly a Marasmiellus pseudostem and root rot. Good drainage and mixed plantings of many different banana clones; and the inclusion of tree crops, might make a difference. Strongly advise your client to abandon monoculture. It is killing the banana "industry" in the Philippines. Devise a business model for a mixed output farm, with possible processing on-farm. Value-added must accrue to the farmer. Banana breeders cannot produce (vertically) resistant varieties to pathogens evolved under monoculture.
