Hello everyone,
I am a relatively new banana person. About one and onehalf years ago I planted two Bkue Javas. One has grown like a weed and the other seems to be plugging along slowly. I have had one bunch; unfortunately, they were not edible:-( Anyway I will be reading and learning. |

Hi Ron,
If you'd like for us to give more advice, you should get to your profile and fill out the geographical info, so we could better evaluate your conditions, etc..... Don't give up hope, because many of us don't see fruit for a few years, so you didn't do bad, even if you couldn't eat them the first time out... BTW - Welcome! ![]()

Island Cassie,
I am located in the Daytona Beach, FL area. They didn't ripen. The bananas remained hard and tasteless - even turning black. I started with two plants that were planted in different parts of the yard. As I mentioned one grown like a weed and the other just kind of plugs slowly along, I now have two plants with blooms. One has five hands so far and the other has not started to open yet. I'm open to any and all hints and suggestions. |

Leave the fruit bunch hanging on the plant until the first finger turns yellow - takes from four months until whenever! They have to be really ripe to taste like they should and there is no hurrying them so don't cut them green! Some folks mention them taking 6 months or more and it sounds like you cut them down too soon. When they turn yellow cut the bunch down and wait until they start to soften (they have a short shelf life) - they cannot be eaten unripe like store bananas and have to be softish and fragrant - but the whole bunch will only be viable for a few days (which is why you never see them in the stores). Good luck with the new bunches!
