Howdy Ya'll: From Tom in Portland, OR. USA Found this site, while trying to track down a "California Gold" baby, to test grow one or two, up here in zone 7.
Sorry I don't know one type of banana from another, but would love to find one that we could get to fruit here, with our short growing season.

Also love to have the experts advise what two types created the California Gold Hybrid. In addition, would like to know if there are any tricks to speed fruit production such as using tin foil as a light reflector to hurry things up?!

I am a new cold hardy palm grower, and bananas are a great tropical tie in, for creating one's own tropical relaxation zone, in their yard at home.

That's it, any ideas or assistance would be sincerely appreciated.

Stay Safe, and Pray for Global Warming...good for our tropical plants! :-) Tom

Welcome to bananas.org, Tom!

Not much is known about the origins of California Gold other than it originally came from a Texas nursery which is now defunct. There is nothing to indicate it was part of any specific breeding program and it's mostly likely a strain of Dwarf Orinoco which is maybe more cold hardy and/or faster fruiting than others. I've been growing it for a few years and have one flowering now.

I think the biggest thing you can do is to help it have temperatures above 60F as much as it will grow faster in spring and early summer so that it grows in early spring. A covering of greenhouse film of a full-blown greenhouse would certainly help.

Good luck,

Harvey
