Newbie with Giant Basjoo Pic
Hello out there Tropical Lovers!!! This is my first post to this forum!! I have read many post and wanted to join and maybe meet some new peeps!!!
I provided a pic of my wife holding a Giant Basjoo. I live in Kentucky, ice cold winters, hot humid summers. I have been growing for many years, and have great experience on Palms, Banana's, and bamboo!!! I almost feel like I am filling out an Job application, LOL!!!! Anyways, I have learned that you must have a sense of humor when gardening, as well as patience and one must learn when to let go , which we all hate to do.

Re: Newbie with Giant Basjoo Pic
Looks awesome!
Welcome! Do you have a picture of the top of the pup's leaves in general? It looks like an Orinoco at first sight, but it could also be Basjoo. What are your protection methods? |

It's actually a Basjoo, however when Hurricane Ike came through our area, it ravaged the leaves. I will look to see if I have another picture of the tops, if I don't, I will go back out and take another picture tomorrow. My protection methods are really simple. I simply cut the stem down to around a foot, then I cover with chopped leaves until Spring. I have had 100% success rate doing it this way.

Re: Newbie with Giant Basjoo Pic
Ok about the pics.
And yes, it is obviously working great! That is a lot of growth in one season. I bet you stump the relatives when they see those growing there in KY. |

Re: Newbie with Giant Basjoo Pic
That particular Banana is watered by "drip emitter", so its being watered 24 hours a day. Lots of manure, chicken poo, planted on top of a huge compost pile of mulch, leaves, soil, drainage is super. You can actually see the pup growing along side of her.

Re: Newbie with Giant Basjoo Pic
Just start planting a bunch of stuff, go crazy planting things, soon, she will realize the therapeutic effects it has on her. Then, you will be free!!!

Re: Newbie with Giant Basjoo Pic
The wife is home now I do agree that it is a nice set up! Buzzwinder, my hubby, has started planting all sorts of things and planning on all sorts of others for next spring. He has gotten me into the planting as well, and now I have some of my own. Therapeutic? Sometimes...but at other times it is mind boggling....but definitely worth seeing the plants grow!!

Re: Newbie with Giant Basjoo Pic
Welcome MG! Looks like you belong on this forum. That pic makes me want a basjoo. How do the nannas taste?
Buzzwinders, I see you are in the same zone as me, so I'm wondering what you do with your nannas in winter. This is my 3rd summer for 2 ice cream. Last winter I kept one potted in cool sunroom, & the other I put to sleep on sunroom floor- covered. It had a hard time taking off in spring, so this year they both get potted. Hoping I get a flower next year.
