Newbie in Canada
 

Hi all! I live in Canada, and have come to this site to inquire about whether it is possible to grow bananas in a Canadian climate. I saw one person on the map that looks to be located in Quebec and am curious if they growing outside or inside. I just can’t find out how to find them on the site. The username is Gambadeur. If anyone can point me in the right direction to find him or her that would be great :)

There are a few of forum members growing in GTA.
Many grow in containers and plant inground in summer.
If you do a forum search you will find more.

Oh my word YES, there are quite a few Musa that will grow in a tub or large pot and spend winters indoors and summers outside lapping up the beautiful Canadian summer. There is a Youtube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/PlantzNThings) run by a smashing bloke called Bill who grows a lot of exotica in Ontario. It all goes down to his basement for the winter, then back out after the last frost. Bill also has a couple of monster aroids that probably scare the neighbours.
I depend a great deal on the advice and wisdom of people on this site, many of whom suffer banana plant obsession to the point of being deeply unwell. Make sure you ask about any little niggles with your plant before they become a real problem.
My suggestion to get you started is the tried and tested Musa Dwarf Cavendish, Ensete Glaucum and Ensete Ventricosum (and EV Maurelii) - all tremendously forgiving - and of course M.Basjoo and M. Sikkimensis. There are many others that will do the trick for you, but any one of those I've listed is a good start.

Also, while having a look on Google for the link to that video I found there is a wealth of stuff on there re growing exotics in Canada, and many suppliers of exotica in the country.

Hi there! I live in southern Ontario and have successfully grown musa basjoo for 4 years in the ground. I am in zone 6b. However, this winter was very cold even down here and they have yet to come up. I think they might all be dead and I have replanted with 6 new ones. I don’t know what your zone is in Quebec but it might be too cold for them. I have read they are good to zone 5, and on other sites zone 6.
