Default New to the site and banana plants

Hi there all
I am new to growing banana plants! I have a love for plants and this is my first year with tropicals. I currently have a musa bajoo growing in the ground and a red banana and two blood bananas in pots. I live in southern ontario canada and was wondering if anyone could offer any advice on how to over winter these? I have heard that the musa bajoo can survive in ground with proper protection. Please advise. Thanks

This forum has some good info: Cold Hardy Bananas - Bananas.org
If you click that you can see a part that says "Search this forum" and you can type Basjoo and see all the topics about it under the cold hardy section.

Anyway, welcome aboard and greetings from Florida.

I suggest you send "Bob" a private message and get his attention. He's been over-wintering for several years and finally has a nice bunch of fruit in the "banana belt" of New Jersey! lol

Welcome! You could also check with a member called "Kaczercat". He lives in Ontario and has done some awesome overwintering!

HI Pawz!
Welcome to the bananas.org forum. Although I might not be in as cold a zone as you are there are definite similarites. I have grown cannas for something like 30 years and bananas for 5. If you are looking for a lush tropical look and ornamental bananas rather than one you can eat, I would recommend the Bordelon. My experience this year has been that if you keep a 3-4" plant semi-active over the winter by providing water, some light etc. and then plant outside in a sunny, fertile location, you can have a flowering ornamental fruit producing plant in 2 years and be the wonder and admiration of your local gardening community. That what I did this year and that what I expect to be able to duplicate every year from now on. Canna and banana plant culture seem to be as similar as the common names are, at least when talking about the easy-care, non demanding, fast growing Bordelon variety!
