New Member from Houston Texas!

I’m VERY new to growing bananas, as in I haven’t even planted my 2 new trees! I am a suburban backyard gardener of fruits, vegetables, herbs, fruit trees, and antique roses. I nurture 13 beautiful rose bushes from the Antique arose Emporium that I believe add something extra to the garden. I then have a modest 300 square feet of raised vegetable beds also some lemons, oranges, loquat and Elderberry growing currently, and am very excited to finally add bananas!
I’m starting small with the bananas until I get more knowledge about growing them and the different varieties that will do well in my area. The ones I currently purchased were the last available and not my first choice but we’ll see how they do! I know there’s so many varieties to choose from and I can’t decide which ones I what to plant next!

Any suggestions on what your favorite variety is and why, I’d love to know!

Thanks,
Monika Jordan

About an hour out from Houston towards Louisiana but unlike all of the other plants you listed bananas like LOTS of water and a good fertilizer. We got around 40 inches of rain in hurricane harvey and my bananas loved it.

Hi there Houston from Australia, look for a banana called blue java, they are also referred to as the vanilla ice cream banana, they are a tall growing banana and are more wind tolerant then some banana varieties. If you can't source the blue java give something like the red Dacca banana a go, I'm sure you will find it rewarding what ever variety you grow. Good luck and happy gardening.
