hello folk's my name is Marty and I am from just outside of Toronto, Canada. I have just recently had an interest in banana plants and found this site. I am not much good on the computer (I guess us 80 year olds are from the old school) but I thought I would introduce myself seeing as I have been gleaning so much info from all the knowledgeable members out there.
Thank you Jarred for the "welcome aboard greetings".

i am in scarborough
do you have a banana plant yet?
are you looking for an ornamental which could overwinter outdoors?
or do you have a sunny window/grow space for more tropical varieties?

Hello, Nice To Hear From You. I Am In Oshawa, Used To Live In The Rouge But Moved When The Kids Moved Out. I Have Four Abyssinian Reds, Four Super Dwarf Cavendish, three Musa Basjoo Plus At Christmas I Tried Cutting One Of My Reds Of Just Above Soil Level And Splitting It In Two And Re-potted Them Up, Big Mistake As I Now Have One New Plant From One Half And Probably Twenty Or Thirty Young Pups From The Other Half That Are About Three Inches Tall, Have To Split And Pot Each One When They Get Their Own Roots. All This Is Going On In A Downnstairs Room. An Experiment Gone Out Of Control. One Of My Reds Is Already Touching The Ceiling And I Still Have Two Months To Go Before I Can Put Them Back Outside.

Some mistake! By my count you've got a Whole Bunch of plants to trade when they get a little bigger. ... That's how it's done. ...:woohoonaner: ...

always nice to be in touch with other banana hobbyists. Quebec City is quite a drive east of me. Just heard from another member who is very close to my area, (about a half hour west of me) so that is good to know.

nice collection!
hauling the plants up and down the basement stairs is quite the chore
mine are in the basement as well
did you bring the basjoo inside or are they mulched and left in the ground?

Re: new member

I brought them inside in pots, they are about four feet high. I don't think there is anyway I could leave them outside with our winters.

Re: new member

i have always brought my basjoo inside but this year i tried leaving some out
i meant to cover them with 2 feet of mulch but it was a busy fall and i did not get around to it
so we will see if they survive
i gave a bunch away to friends and some got mulched in the fall hopefully those ones survive
forum member cincinnana as well as others successfully overwinter their basjoo outside just south of us (ohio)
the stems get cut down/die back in the fall but new growth comes up in the spring

I have had my Abyssinian reds for two years and have kept them in pots and wintered over in basement, got all my other plants last year and they are in pots although I am going to plant in ground this year. My baby reds are coming along fantastic, still not ready to pot up.

hope you have luck with the overwintering, I might have to think of something like that next year, I am getting crowded out in the room I have mine in for the winter. I am also trying to germinate a few different (four) vareties upstairs on heating pads, new to all this seed stuff so I do not have high expectations but if you do not try you do not learn , right. I am hoping things work out as well as my Red Abyssinian experiment but we shall see.

I read somewhere a few years ago about a Dr. in Ohio who leaves his banana plants out all winter, apparently he had them all around his house.
