Hi all,
My name is Mark and I have recently joined as a member.
I live in Adelaide Australia.
I purchased a few Abyssinian plants a few months ago and adore them. I have since purchased some seeds but I am having great trouble with germination.
My other problem is that I am not able to purchase any variety with seed due to the customs restrictions in Australia.
So basically, I joined so I could have a chat and gain some advice on the many questions I have about the ornamental banana plant.
I look forward to discussions with many of you.
Kind regards
Mark.

Welcome....Have been to your hometown....we actually toured across Australia.....by train!! Beautiful, beautiful country!!! We still tell people about Cook....what is it....600 miles away from any other city or town? It had 2 residents when we were there.....railroad employees....

I have only been a member for a couple weeks but have already learned so much...it's a great site and you'll enjoy it. Everyone is so knowledgeable and helpful. I'm growing a tropical garden in VA....Zone 7....and get more confident each time I read the posts that it will be successful....

Glad to have you!

The CRFG group down there led by Sheryl Backhouse can help you get some fruiting bananas and a whole lot more.

Welcome! Mark good to have you aboard. Banana seeds some can be hard to germinate. as with any seed soil temps and moisture are the keys. we have some excellent resources for finding out for us newbies. Banana seeds have a vary hard outer shell I've heard that some of the Banana.org people file it down until they get to the lighter part inside being careful not to damage the Germ. that lets moisture get in at an exhilarated rate or you can just Waite and let them do it on there own. Gab for example stated in one thread that his Ensete ventricosum seed took 6 moths to germinate. Chong is the go to for really specific Temp guides shes a wiz. Medea hound knows tuns too. but really if you just do searches for topics there a bunch of threads that tell you what to do.

Ps i found this vid in a search its kinda fun!

also heres a thread that will get you started.

Welcome aboard Mark! Nice to see another hot-area grower. As Damaclese says, it's tough to start from seed. But I have a friend in Adelaide who has mature plants; I'll see if he's got pups he's willing to part with.....

I'm surprised there's not more varieties of bananas in Australia. I'd have assumed the climate would be more mild in most places there, which would be better for a wider variety. Are there indigenous varieties there now, which they are in fear of losing? (If you know this info)

Welcome and hope to see you posting round.

Welcome aboard, Mark :) ! Totally Luv Abyssinium, too! Luv Zebrinas & Ruby Siams.... All kinds of ornamentals. It's a very friendly & info-packed site. If ya have any questions about using the forum, just ask.
Btw, with some banana seeds, best way to get them to germinate is to put them in a sunny window. For some seeds, alternating temperature is necessary.
Good Luck with your nanner ventures!
