Hello,
Just found this site and just planted my first banana about ten minutes ago It is an African Rhino Horn and I'm wondering if anyone knows how they taste? The first site I found said it is a plantain and the second said it is a banana to eat raw :/ So, can you fill me in?
I'm in central FL and would be grateful for any plants/pups to start my banana garden if anyone has some to trade or gift to us.
We are a large, homeschooling family and are doing our best to get a good sustenance garden going.

Smiles
Lisa

Hiya Re: New here

I recommend that you get some Orinoco.
They are pretty common, hardy and can be eaten out of hand or cooked. They do pretty well in Central FL.

If you look around you can usually find feral bananas around many lakes in central FL. Keep a shovel and plastic bag in your car!

Good luck from South Florida.

Thank so much for all the welcomes!!!

I had no idea there were feral bananas! I'm going to keep my eyes open for sure. This week we harvested wild beauty berries for making jam

Most grateful for the offer of pups!! I will have to arrange meeting up with you- we are furloughed right now so gas is budgeted very tightly until we get a paycheck. Do you ever come up by Altamonte or Sanford? I have to take my older kids to work there regularly.

smiles,
Lisa

It's a plantain that gets really colorful and tall. Not that cold hardy though. I know that Nick grows it and has successfully fruited it, and he's on the south end of Lake Okeechobee. Good luck!

Well geez, maybe I should offer it for a swap of a raw eating banana then. My family spent time in Guatemala and got totally burned out on plantains and will not eat them Wish the tag would have told me that. Anyone want to trade for something tasty eaten out of hand?
