Hello all... I found this forum by accident on the net and I've enjoyed reading the posts for a couple weeks now. I grow a few bananas, mostly the common stuff (Orinoco, Grand Nain, Ensete glaucum) as well as a few palms and lots of subtropical dicots (fruits, FL and MX natives, etc.) Thanks for a great forum!!!

Welcome Seagrapes!
We're all glad that you've been enjoying the site. Word of caution, though. You will find that many on this board are addicts! Banana addicts! Do you also grow seagrapes? Chong |

Oh yes, I do grow seagrapes. They are all in pots b/c of freezes, but I have had one plant survive 24F with defoliation but NO stem dieback! It's the hardiest one I've seen so far...
I've noticed there are lots of banana addicts. That's OK, it's just like the palm addicts on the Palmtalk forum. I really like both bananas and palms, I just wish I had more room to grow them. Right now, I'm limited to a standard sized residential lot. I guess I could eliminate all the grass to plant more... ![]() |

Awesome, Chuck!
How big do they(Seagrapes) get in pots? Do you get any fruits yet? There a member here, his name is JoeReal, and he also has a standard size lot home in Davis, CA, and he literally has hundreds of varieties of fruits in his yard, in spite of the fact that he has a large patio, Nipa Hut (play house made of thatch), and get this - a lawn! Granted one of his citrus trees has over 70 grafts of various citrus cultivars, and several stone fruit trees with at least a dozen, or so, varietal grafts on each of them. Besides that, he has individual fruit trees that are just their unique variety. On the planting strip next to the sidewalk in front of his house he's got a couple of Quince trees that has several grafts of various pear varieties. Check out his posts. He's also posted primers on various type of grafting techniques. Enjoy! Chong |

No fruits yet. I had a couple plants bloom a couple years ago, but they didn't set any seed. I suspect they might have been both male or female. Those particular plants froze in 2007 and didn't return, BUT the one in my gallery DID survive the freeze and is growing well now. It has yet to flower, though. I can air layer it if I want to propagate it, but I'm thinking about getting more seedlings to try and find another hardy one for cross pollination.

Re: New to the forum...
Thanks magicgreen... btw, your plant is a fiddle-leaf fig (Ficus lyrata). Not a seagrape, but still a nice plant. They eventually become a good sized tree.
