![]() I recently picked up a very sad looking Maurwlii from Lowe’s and hoped to save it. I’m new to banana plants and despite all my efforts I am lost regarding what ails this plant. The leaves were torn, crispy, yellowing and a little limp. I also noticed a lot of black on cut stems. One appeared to be rotting and did rot over a few days. I removed it. I also removed one of the most badly damaged leaves. A newer leaf had some brown spots on it. One of which opened up antitely and then tore to the outer seven. A second new leaf was coming up and today it’s high enough that I can see a very large brown patch will cover the leaf. I inspected the root ball and did not see any rotting roots. All were white, but I didn’t disturb the ball to see if roots at the center of the ball were good/bad.
What’s wrong with this ensete? I don’t know how to post photos. |

![]() Welcome to the Jungle....
![]() Have fun here. Now that your new plant is being cared for it should sort itself out in 30 days or more once it acclimates to your care. Treat the plant as you would any tropical with fertilizer and a good soilless mix and you should be fine. |

![]() Unfortunately, after speaking with a grower in Washington DC, who was kind enough to respond to my desperate Facebook messages it appears my suspicions regarding a fungus and root rot were correct. On their advice, I did have to remove it from the pot and disturbed the entire root ball. I have removed all of the roots in the ball of the plant is significantly smaller. I’m having a very hard time creating a well draining or fast draining soil. I mix my own soil and I’m particular about measurements. Can anyone tell me what to do here? What is the appropriate soil mixture recipe for this plant? I think you all so very much for your help.
