Default New to Bananas.org

Hey I am Joe and I am new to this site. My wife and I will soon be living in Florida. We are buying a house in New Smyrna Beach, Florida which is about 45 mins south of Daytona Beach and is on the central east coast of the state.

Can anyone recommend a good variety of Banana that tastes good and would thrive in the 9b zone?

Thanks and I looking forward to meeting you and learning about bananas,

Thank you,

Joe

Brazilian, Namwah, SH-3640. I don't care much for Namwah, but they take cold about as good as any and are a favorite of most people.

Varieties I supposedly bought: Manzano, Cavendish, Blue Java, Sweetheart, and Gros Michel.
What it seems I actually have: Brazilian, Cavendish, Namwah, Dwarf Red, Gros Michel, Pisang Ceylon, Veinte Cohol and SH 3640, and American Goldfinger. FHIA 1, Paggi and FHIA 17... Always room for one more.

Welcome neighbor--well kinda.

I'm hoping to get many of my "mysteries" in the ground soon but even in pots they're doing well. I know Dwarf Cavendish is supposed to be very cold intolerant but I was growing a nice one in Jacksonville for a year or so. (We got snow that winter but a tarp tossed over her worked; it helped that she was in a protected area. No, I don't know if she ever produced there but she was growing strong when I left her and my little tree frog behind. . In other words--plant strategically and be prepared to protect sometimes and you might become a zone pusher, too. Hehe, I'm about to go dig ramp roots in WV and play with them here in Titusville; they are not "hot" lovers at all but even if I have to find space in a fridge to store roots during our hellish summers I will because I do love ramps. )

Welcome to the Jungle....

Have fun here....

Locally, at big box stores you will find plants to grow,
that are highly acceptable

They are the least expensive at 10-20.00 bucks.
All are quality plants.

For possibly different varieties go to the better nurserys in your area.

Brazilian is tasty, disease resistant and very cold hardy, but take up to 6 months to ripen and have small bunches of small fruit. It's a trade off...sh-3640 is also quite cold hardy and disease resistant and makes bigger bunches that ripen quickly. Some say they are great tasting, some disagree strongly. I hope to have a say on it this summer.
