I have raised bananas in zone 7 for seven years. I like big leaved tropicals and exotic plants. I am a horticulturist, formerly supervisor of a botanic garden, now living in coastal Delaware.

My tips for bananas in marginally hardy areas are:
1. Plant on a mound that sheds water in winter to keep the tubers dry so they don't rot.
2. plant with lots of compost. Bananas prefer organic to petroleum fertilizers. The leaves on my bananas are six to eight feet long!
3. plant where there is some shelter from high winds or the leaves will always be in tatters.
4. Give away the many babies till your neighborhood is a jungle.

Thats the best advice! there are 430 houses in my neighborhood and i wont stop until the all have at least one. LOL.

I did plant my banana plants on somewhat of mound but next time I will plant them a bit higher. Thanks for the advice.
