Pinwheel New Banana Lover

Hey Everyone,
I am new to this fun site, found out about Bananas on Dave's Garden when I posted picture of my blooming NOID Mother Banana. This will be fun.
I saw some really really red bananas at a nursery in Birmingham last weekend - redder than mine, is there a certain variety that is a brilliant red. Mine seem to have red stems but not much red on the leaf. Unfortunatly my friend and I got there at closing time, Sat evening and we told the proprieter as she left that we were just looking - before we saw this plant. And we headed back for Destin early the next morning.

Hey Beverly.

Greetings from Mobile! I grew up in FWB and still have family there. What you saw was probably Siam Ruby. You'll love it here, welcome!! Cruz around the site, and check out galleries, you'll find it.

Thanks so much! You are all so nice and I just know this will be a site that I visit daily. Yesterday, I worked all day in my yard - moved several varigated gingers, moved 3 knock out roses, cut back some scented geraniums - all kinds of changes. I also visited my baby nanner nursery, located under the big leaves! I will post another picture tomorow. Off today but have to get ready for work tomorrow.
Goodnight

Wow Mike (I love Savannah), ais that a new picture of your bananas developing? Mine aren't that big yet but I hope they will be before we get weather too cool. How cold DOES it have to get to kill the bloom and stop bananas from 'making'. And what variety are these banana plants? Sorry for so many questions, but I am new at this.

Welcome neighbor! Good to have another banana nut here along the Gulf Coast. What varieties do you have? You mentioned a red--they are very cold sensitive. I have an unknown red (see avatar) and a dwarf red, I barely managed to get the unknown thru last winter alive even keeping it in the garage most of the time.

Hey SBL! I came over your way to a Garden Tour in the spring with my garden club. One home had some beautiful bamboo that I fell in love with! I have some Crepe Myrtles that I would actually like to replace (tired of the mess - and they are just so comman in our area) with some clumping bamboo that would be about the height of a C. M. (under 15') and also that can take the wind - my home is about a tenth of a mile (the way a crow flies) from the Gulf. If you have any ideas about that let me know.
I have two varieties of bananas - one, from Home Depot, had a tag that only said Red Leafed Banana and the other I have no idea (a NOID) looks like a plain old banana that produces pups easily. And that is the one that has an active bloom that I am so excited about.

I'm about a 1/2 mile from the bay and that helps a little when it gets cold, but as far as bananas, the cold hardy ones are Orinoco, Raja Puri, CA Gold, Dwarf Cavendish, Ice Cream. I have all of those except CA Gold. I also have some Reds, but they have to stay in pots so they can be brought in for cold protection.

One key to getting the bananas thru winter is keeping them pretty dry--they will rot quick if wet and cold.
